Recent Trends in Disability Employment
Line graph with a zigzagging line trending upward.
Historical data on disability employment tell a consistent story: The employment rate for disabled people is steadily climbing, yet a gap persists between disabled people and their nondisabled peers (38% vs. 75%, respectively, in 2024). But a closer look at recent data reveals some notable trends: Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, employment rates have risen for everyone, but significantly more for disabled people. The data also show substantial gains in employment among female and Black workers with disabilities. To learn more, check out this month’s edition of Trendlines, produced by the Employment and Training Administration with ODEP in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. In partnership with the National League of Cities, ODEP and the Women’s Bureau cohosted the recent webinar “Access to Good Jobs for All: Expanding Equity Through Inclusive Workforce Development.” In case you missed it, a recording of the event is now available, featuring Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid of Tempe, Arizona, who shared how she advances inclusive recruiting, hiring and training of women and disabled people across the city. The event also covered the broad range of technical assistance resources available to assist municipalities with policy development and implementation. Practices to Support Employers in Adopting Inclusive Apprenticeship
Apprenticeship, on-the-job, experience, mentoring, learning, training, working, practicing.
Registered apprenticeship programs (RAPs) combine classroom and paid on-the-job training—a highly productive workforce training model that benefits both workers and employers. Recognizing the promise of RAPs, the U.S. Department of Labor seeks to expand apprenticeship both to new industries where it is not widely used (e.g., health care and IT) and to populations that are underrepresented in apprenticeship, including disabled people. For employers, who hire apprentices and pay their wages, the recently published ODEP-funded brief “Practices to Increase Employer Adoption of Inclusive Apprenticeship” helps identify best practices and clear up misconceptions about inclusive apprenticeship.
