The MCBS Roundup is a bi-monthly digest of recent product announcements from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS).
*2023 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Survey File – Early Release LDS *
CMS plans to release a new product, the 2023 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Survey File - Early Release LDS. This file provides select microdata from the MCBS Survey File LDS on an expedited schedule. The data on demographics, health and chronic conditions, preventive health behaviors and other questionnaire topics collected during the Fall Round will be made available within 10 months from the end of data collection for beneficiaries living in the community only.
Additional information on release date and file ordering guidelines will be available later this year.
*2022 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Survey File Variable Crosswalk 2015-2022 *
September 11, 2024: CMS released the Survey File Variable Crosswalk [ https://www.cms.gov/research-statistics-data-and-systems/research/mcbs/codebooks/2022-mcbs-survey-file-variable-crosswalk-2015-2022 ] with data for 2015 - 2022. This crosswalk is a reference guide to allow experienced MCBS data users to assess the feasibility of conducting longitudinal or repeated cross-sectional analyses on variables of interest across two or more MCBS Limited Data Set (LDS) data years. This variable crosswalk is designed to be a complementary tool to support analytic decisions and should be used in conjunction with the more detailed information available to data users in the MCBS codebooks, Data User’s Guides (DUG), and Methodology Reports.
*MCBS 2022 Chartbook *
September 5, 2024: CMS released the annual update to the MCBS Chartbook [ https://data.cms.gov/medicare-current-beneficiary-survey-mcbs ] visualization tool with data for 2022. This product is designed to provide the public with an interactive collection of charts and tables based on estimates from the MCBS.
*2022 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Methodology Report*
August 22, 2024: CMS released the 2022 MCBS Methodology Report [ https://www.cms.gov/data-research/research/medicare-current-beneficiary-survey/data-documentation-codebooks/2022-mcbs-methodology-report ]. This report is designed to be a complementary tool to support analytic decisions and should be used in conjunction with the MCBS codebooks and the Data User’s Guide (DUG).
*Public Use File on Financial Well-being of Medicare Beneficiaries Living in the Community 2022*
August 14, 2024: CMS released the annual update to the public use file on Financial Well-being of Medicare Beneficiaries Living in the Community [ https://www.cms.gov/data-research/research/medicare-current-beneficiary-survey/data-tables/2022-mcbs-puf-financial-well-being-medicare-beneficiaries ] with estimates for 2022. Also released was an infographic, Savings Among Medicare Beneficiaries [ https://www.cms.gov/data-research/research/medicare-current-beneficiary-survey/data-briefs-tutorials/mcbs-savings-among-medicare-beneficiaries-living-community-2022-infographic ].
