Advancing health equity during National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month
During September, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) recognizes National Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month [ https://www.cms.gov/priorities/health-equity/minority-health/resource-center/resource-center/health-observances ]. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a chronic disease that causes the body to produce abnormal blood cells that cannot deliver oxygen to the rest of the body properly. These cells can restrict blood flow, leading to serious health problems like anemia, chronic pain, heart disease, infection, and even stroke.
Sickle cell disease affects about 100,000 people in the United States, but more than 90% of people with SCD are Black, and between 3% and 9% are Hispanic or Latino. Additionally, about 1 in 365 Black babies and 1 in 16,300 Hispanic babies in the U.S. are born with SCD. One in 13 Black babies are born with sickle cell trait (SCT), meaning they only have one sickle cell gene. While people with SCT usually do not have any symptoms of sickle cell disease, they can still pass the trait to their children. Many people with SCD report that they cannot get proper care, face stigma, and often have their symptoms ignored.
During National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we’re continuing to look for ways to address disparities that affect the communities we serve and providing resources to help advance health equity. Share the following resources with your community this month and beyond to raise awareness about sickle cell disease.
