US Department of Labor announces outreach events in Alabama for current, former coal miners, survivors on black lung benefits

*WASHINGTON – *The U.S. Department of Labor will host outreach events in Alabama on Sept. 25 and 26 in Jasper and Tuscaloosa for current and former coal miners suffering disabilities related to black lung disease, and their survivors to assist them in filing or refiling claims for benefits.                                                                                                           

Conducted by the department’s Division of Coal Mine Workers’ Compensation, the day-long sessions will focus on the federal Black Lung Program that currently provides benefits to about 400 people in Alabama. 

The division offers similar events throughout the nation as part of its commitment to ensure eligible individuals can claim and receive benefits in a timely manner.

“The U.S. Department of Labor encourages current, former coal miners and survivors in Alabama and the surrounding areas to attend one of these events to learn more about eligibility for benefits under the Black Lung Benefits Act,” said Division of Coal Mine Workers’ Compensation Director Mike Chance. “Attendees can get assistance with filing or refiling claims and get information on eligibility and the adjudication process.”

Open to the public, the events require no pre-registration to attend. Events will be held as follows:
