Summary 

As of September 1, 2024, all unencrypted email traffic and any traffic directed through port 25 is now blocked. To continue with uninterrupted email traffic, relay settings must be updated as described below. 

*Note: Individual email users are not affected by this update and are not required to take action. This campaign applies only to hosted IT systems within the CMS Cloud environment that generate and send emails through CMS email proxy services.*

Action Required

Over the past year, the CMS Hybrid Cloud Team has sent several communications with instructions to update relay connection settings and encrypt traffic for customers managing hosted systems that use CMS Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) Cloud email relays to generate and send emails *by August 31, 2024.*

IT systems that generate and send emails through the CMS Cloud email relay servers using Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) must use the updated connection details [ https://cloud.cms.gov/introduction-email-as-service ] and enable encryption immediately*.*

*New Relay Connections*

Customers must update and verify their SMTP relay settings for ports 465 and 587 using the addresses for Amazon Web Service (AWS) and Microsoft Azure (MAG) provided in the Relay Connection instructions [ https://cloud.cms.gov/introduction-email-as-service#relay-connection ], as any email traffic through port 25 is blocked as of *September 1, 2024.*

*Encryption*

In addition to updating relay settings, customers must verify that they have enabled encryption using the connection verification instructions [ https://cloud.cms.gov/introduction-email-as-service#connection-verification ], as any unencrypted email traffic is being blocked as of *September 1, 2024.*
