Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) provides an at-a-glance summary of news from around the agency.
*CMS Approves State Plan Amendments Extending Postpartum Coverage in Nevada*
May 3: CMS marked another important maternal health milestone by approving Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) postpartum coverage extensions in Nevada, an opportunity made possible through the American Rescue Plan (ARP). Nationally, people across 46 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S.V.I. now have access to Medicaid and CHIP coverage for a full 12 months following pregnancy — up from just 60 days before the ARP. Postpartum coverage extensions form one of the cornerstones of CMS’ Maternity Care Action Plan [ https://www.cms.gov/files/document/cms-maternity-care-action-plan.pdf ] — part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis [ https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Maternal-Health-Blueprint.pdf ]. Here are the approved state plan amendments for Nevada for Medicaid [ https://www.medicaid.gov/sites/default/files/2024-05/NV-23-0033_0.pdf ] and CHIP [ https://www.medicaid.gov/sites/default/files/2024-05/NV-24-0008-and-NV-24-0009_0.pdf ].
*CMS Extends Flexibilities that Help Eligible People Renew Medicaid & CHIP Coverage*
May 9: CMS issued an Informational Bulletin [ https://www.medicaid.gov/federal-policy-guidance/downloads/cib050924-e14.pdf ] announcing an extension of flexibilities approved under section 1902(e)(14)(A) of the Social Security Act (“(e)(14) strategies”) through June 30, 2025, to help eligible people with Medicaid or in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) stay covered as states continue renewals and update their income and eligibility determination systems. CMS continues to urge states to adopt these waiver strategies, which reduce red tape and are proven [ https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/press-releases/biden-harris-administration-releases-new-medicaid-and-chip-renewal-data-showing-role-state-policy ] to help more eligible people maintain coverage.
*CMS Highlights Opportunities to Improve Access to Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services *
May 10: CMS issued an Informational Bulletin [ https://www.medicaid.gov/federal-policy-guidance/downloads/mh-sud-med-chip-enrol-expncg-hmles.pdf ] to encourage states to leverage available opportunities in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program to improve access to mental health and substance use disorder services for eligible individuals experiencing homelessness.
