Raising Awareness Around Kidney Health During Women’s Health Week
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recognizes National Women’s Health Week (NWHW), which takes place from May 12-18, 2024. Celebrated annually, NWHW encourages all women to prioritize their overall physical, mental, social, and emotional health and well-being.
*Women’s Health and Chronic Kidney Disease *
CMS is committed to raising awareness about the health concerns facing women, particularly chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is a condition in which the kidneys are damaged and cannot properly filter blood as well as they should. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) [ https://www.cdc.gov/kidneydisease/publications-resources/ckd-national-facts.html ], CKD is slightly more common in women (14%) than men (12%).
CKD can be caused by many different conditions and circumstances. Those at higher risk such as people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or other risk factors should have routine testing for CKD. It is also important to follow a healthy diet and follow the treatment plan for any chronic diseases such as routinely taking medications for diabetes or high blood pressure. If untreated, CKD can lead to complications such as heart disease, stroke, or kidney failure, also known as end stage renal disease (ESRD), in which dialysis or a kidney transplant is needed for survival. It is important to know your risk and get screened for early detection.
