Raise awareness of women’s health disparities during National Women’s Health Week
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) is celebrating National Women’s Health Week (NWHW) from May 12 – 18, 2024. Beginning on Mother’s Day each year, NWHW encourages women and girls to prioritize their health and urges all to take actions to help women achieve their highest level of health.
This week and all year, CMS OMH is highlighting disparities in women’s health across all minority populations to advance health equity. Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., with more than 60 million women living with some form of the disease. In 2021, 22.6% of deaths in Black women were attributed to heart disease, compared to 18% of deaths in White women.
Aside from these racial disparities in chronic diseases, social, economic, and environmental factors all affect the ways women experience and access preventive care, like health screenings. In 2021, only 67.5% of women ages 50 – 74 with lower incomes reported recent breast cancer screenings, compared to 78.7% of women with higher incomes in the same age range. Furthermore, White women with Medicare fee-for-service have the highest breast cancer screening rate (35%), compared with Black (32%), Asian American/Pacific Islander (25%), Hispanic (22%), and American Indian/Alaska Native enrollees (21%).
National Women’s Health Week emphasizes the importance of making health care accessible for all women and girls, regardless of their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, or geographic community. This week, we encourage you to share these resources to support the health of the women in your community.
*Resources *
* Review our Coverage to Care (C2C) Women Preventive Services [ https://www.cms.gov/About-CMS/Agency-Information/OMH/Downloads/Preventive-Services-Women.pdf ] flyer—available in nine languages—to help women learn about preventive services available to them at no cost under most health coverage.
* Explore other C2C resources, like the Roadmap to Better Care [ https://www.cms.gov/media/535651 ], which explains how to access primary care and preventive services, and the Manage Your Chronic Condition [ https://www.cms.gov/priorities/health-equity/c2c/manage-your-chronic-condition ] webpage, which describes the benefits of chronic care management for patients with multiple chronic conditions.
* Read through the Breast Cancer Screening Disparities in Medicare Beneficiaries [ https://www.cms.gov/files/document/bcs-october2022-datasnapshot.pdf ] data snapshot to learn about racial and geographic disparities in breast cancer screenings among Medicare enrollees.
* Share our Rural Maternal Health Care [ https://www.cms.gov/about-cms/agency-information/omh/health-equity-programs/rural-health ] resources, including Advancing Rural Maternal Health Equity [ https://www.cms.gov/files/document/maternal-health-may-2022.pdf ], A Conversation on Maternal Health Care in Rural Communities [ https://www.cms.gov/files/document/rural-maternal-health-forum-summary.pdf ], and Improving Access to Maternal Health Care in Rural Communities [ https://www.cms.gov/About-CMS/Agency-Information/OMH/equity-initiatives/rural-health/09032019-Maternal-Health-Care-in-Rural-Communities.pdf ], to learn how CMS is working to improve maternal health outcomes for women in rural areas.
