Amazon Linux 2 (AL2) End of Life (EOL) by June 2025

Summary

On *June 1st, 2025*, Amazon will officially push *Amazon Linux 2 (AL2) *to* end of life (EOL)* after extending their original EOL date of June 2023. CMS Hybrid Cloud will continue to support AL2 until June 2025. It is mandatory for our customers to decommission all AL2 instances before EOL. Customers should begin migration to AL2023 as soon as possible. We will reach out to any customers with active AL2 instances via support ticket on *May 2nd, 2025*, to ensure all AL2 instances are closed.

We will release our *final AL2 Gold Image (GI)* on *April 11th, 2025*. *Please transition to AL2023 [ https://cloud.cms.gov/gold-image-amazon-linux-2023 ] immediately for continued CMS Cloud support.*

Timeline

* *April 11th, 2025*: The final CMS AL2 GI will be released.
* *May 2nd, 2025*: Customers with any active AL2 instances will receive support tickets to help with migration to AL2023. 
* *Before June 1st, 2025*: Customers are required to decommission all AL2 instances and transition to AL2023.
* *June 1st, 2025*: AL2 reaches EOL. All AL2 instances must be decommissioned for environments to remain compliant.

Impact

Hybrid Cloud Managed patching will continue to support AL2 until operating system (OS) EOL on June 1st, 2025. CMS published the AL2023 GI [ https://cloud.cms.gov/gold-image-amazon-linux-2023 ] in July 2024.

Please note it is mandatory to decommission AL2 before the vendor specified EOL on June 1st, 2025, to remain in accordance with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) guidance due to critical vulnerabilities that will not be addressed by the vendor and to align with HHS and CMS Acceptable Risks Safeguards (ARS) – SA-22 (Unsupported System Components). We recommend Business and System Owners to contact their Information System Security Officer (ISSO) to submit a formal Risk-Based Decision (RBD) for approval by the CMS Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Customers still using AL2 by May 2, 2025 will receive a Hybrid Cloud Jira ticket to assist with migration.
