Raise awareness and share resources for World AIDS Day – New fact sheet available!
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) recognizes World AIDS Day and the importance of raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and providing relevant resources for those living with HIV/AIDS.
CMS has released a new fact sheet on HIV [ https://www.cms.gov/files/document/human-immunodeficiency-virus-hiv-fact-sheet.pdf ] to help share information on how CMS has taken strides to address and treat HIV. Please view the fact sheet here.
An estimated 1.2 million people [ https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/overview/data-and-trends/statistics ] in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS in 2022. While AIDS can impact all people, it disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. For instance, new HIV diagnoses per 100,000 Black adults and adolescents was about 8 times that of their White counterparts, and 67% of the 31,800 new AIDS cases in 2022 came from gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
While there is currently no effective cure for HIV, many tools and treatments can help those living with HIV manage their symptoms and prevent HIV from progressing to AIDS. As new treatments and discoveries have been made, annual infections for those with HIV have been reduced by two-thirds since the 1980s [ https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/overview/data-and-trends/statistics#:~:text=Annual%20infections%20in%20the%20U.S.,epidemic%20in%20the%20mid%2D1980s. ]. We encourage you to review and share the resources below with the populations you serve to continue to spread awareness about World AIDS Day.
