Find Out How CMS is Expanding Access to High Quality Accountable Care
Today, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) provided an update [ https://www.healthaffairs.org/content/forefront/expanding-permanent-pathways-medicare-accountable-care ] on its agency-wide efforts to have all people with Traditional Medicare in accountable care relationships with providers that take responsibility for quality of care and health outcomes, that coordinate care to reduce care fragmentation, and that avoid unnecessary costs for individuals and the health system.
Currently, nearly half of people with Traditional Medicare receive treatment from providers in an Accountable Care Organization (ACO). These include ACOs which are part of CMS Innovation Center models (pilot programs) as well as the Medicare Shared Savings Program (CMS’ permanent ACO program).
Innovation Center models can effectively set the direction for the future. By adopting changes to the Medicare program, CMS can achieve lasting transformation to meet the needs of people and providers across the country.
This Health Affairs Forefront blog [ https://www.healthaffairs.org/content/forefront/expanding-permanent-pathways-medicare-accountable-care ] describes how CMS aims to bring high-quality accountable care to all people with Medicare through these ACO initiatives and the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.
